Information about Bon Jovi Verizon Center
Bon Jovi began in Sayreville, New Jersey, where Jon & his 2 brothers were raised by they parents. By his early teens, Jon was hanging out at local clubs, convinced that 1 day he would be a rock star. By the time he was 16, Jon was playing clubs. It was not long before he hooked up with keyboardist David Bryan, who played with him in a 10 piece rhythm & blues band called Atlantic City Expressway. Jon also performed with bands called The Rest, The Lechers & John Bongiovi & the Wild Ones. Meanwhile, Richie Sambora was also performing locally with a funk & fusion band called "Extremes", before hooking up with Alec John Such in the band "The Message". After The Message, Alec played with Tico Torres in Phantom's Opera. The members of Bon Jovi crossed paths in these early days, but the current lineup didn't come together until March of 1983 after the 1rst Bon Jovi single, "Runaway," had become a hit. In one of those scenarios, right person, right place, right time, Jon managed to get a job at a recording studio. Jon's cousin, Tony Bongiovi, was a co/owner of the Power Station in New York City. Jon had written "Runaway," & in 1980, he recorded the demo of the song.
A local radio station WAPT included "Runaway" on a compilation tape, & the song started getting some serious airplay. "Runaway" got Jon noticed, & by touring he could capitalize on the popularity of the song. To support the single Jon gave Dave, Alec & Tico a call, & finally Richie signed on, & the band came together. At 1 show, where they opened for Scandal, the band caught the attention of record exec Derek Shulman, who signed them to PolyGram Records. PolyGram toyed with the name, before Shulman anglicized John Bongiovi's name to Bon Jovi. Their self titled debut came out January 21 st, 1984. Filled with the groups now signature power ballads & hooked filled tunes underscored by soaring guitar riffs & well crafted melodies, the album went gold. The album was a rugged soulful collection of songs about how tough it is being a teenager. Bon Jovi released their follow up album, "7800 Fahrenheit", in April 1985; it sold equally to its predecessor. A few tours opening for Kiss, Judas Priest & the Scorpions had helped Bon jovi build up a considerable fan base which appreciated the band's songs & powerful stage presence.
Slippery When Wet, the band's 3 rd album, provided the break trough the band needed. Powered by songs like "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Wanted Dead or Alive" & "Livin' on a Prayer", the LP went gold & platinum simultaneously within 6 weeks of its release. By April of 1987, "Slippery When Wet" sold 7 million copies worldwide. Bon Jovi won the American Music Award & People's Choice Awards for Band Of The Year, & MTV gave Bon Jovi a Best Performance Award for the video "Livin' on a Prayer". By the time the Slippery Tour finished in Hawaii on October 17 th, 1987, the album had sold in excess of 14 million copies, putting it in the same league as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
