Lily Allen News

Lily Allen is a pop artist hailing from England. Born as Lily Rose Allen on the 2nd of May, 1985; Lily Allen is the daughter of the actor/comedian Keith Allen and the film producer, Alison Owen. Lily Allen’s musical influences include artists such as PRINCE, Aaliyah, Rolf Harris brownstone, Bjork, Pharoahe Monch, Shaggy, Eminem, Blondie, and other notable artists. Lily Allen is currently signed with Regal Records, Parlophone, and EMI.

Lily was born in Hammersmith, London and she eventually lived at the North London borough of Islington. Lily Allen has a number of siblings like her older sister, Sarah, her younger brother Alfie Owen-Allen, and a couple of half siblings. Lily Allen’s window to a musical career was opened during a holiday in Ibiza, where she met George Lamb. Lamb was an A&R man and former manager of Audio Bullys. Lamb introduced Lily Allen to music producers Future Cut, who collaborated with Allen to develop lyrics she had written.

Lily Allen had a brief stint as an artist for Warner Music in 2002 even though she had not released any single. Allen eventually signed with Regal Records in late 2005. Lily Allen utilized the community website MySpace and uploaded tracks she had written.  This proved to be very effective and soon visitors of her MySpace profile grew and her tracks spread like wildfire on the internet. This got the attention of the UK music publication NME, online critic musicOMH.com, and online music weblog Popjustice.

Lily Allen released her debut album Alright, Still on the 14th of July, 2006 in Europe, and the 29th of July, 2006 in Australia. Lily Allen’s Alright, Still was released under Regal Zonophone Records. The album received rave reviews from a lot of critics. All Music Guide rated Lily Allen’s Alright, Still 3.5 out of stars, Entertainment Wise rated the album 4 out of 5 stars, Pitchfork gave it 8.3 out of 10, musicOMH.com gave it 4 out of 5 stars, Observer and UK Fusion gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars, and Prefix gave the album an 8 out of 10 rating. The album sold quite well, and Australia’s ARIA certified Lily Allen’s Alright, Still gold as it sold more than 35,000 copies in Australia. UK’s BPI certified the album platinum when it sold more than 300,000 copies in Europe. Lily Allen’s Alright, Still peaked at the #2 spot of the UK Album charts, proving Lily Allen’s musical prowess. The album is scheduled for its US release on the 30th of January 2007. Lily Allen’s Alright, Still is an eleven-track album which includes the songs:

  • "Smile" – 3:17
  • "Knock 'Em Out" – 2:53
  • "LDN" – 3:10
  • "Everything's Just Wonderful" – 3:28
  • "Not Big" – 3:16
  • "Friday Night" – 3:06
  • "Shame for You" – 4:16
  • "Littlest Things" – 3:02
  • "Take What You Take" – 4:06
  • "Friend of Mine" – 3:57
  • "Alfie" – 2:46

A track on Lily Allen’s Alright, Still is dedicated to her brother Alfie Owen-Allen entitled Alfie. It should also be noted that a week after her debut album’s UK release, it was ranked at the #10 spot in the Starbucks Music Chart in the US, although a few stores have the album and available via import only. All in all, Lily Allen is truly a young artist to watch out for.
