Hot Ahmanson Theater Shows:

Light in the Piazza
It's a story about hope in the face of alarming and escalating evidence to the contrary—a show that says we can believe in a miracle to set us free, to redeem us, even when we know that it probably can't, probably won't. It's also—and this is why it's such a welcome breath of fresh air!—a show that says to audiences: we trust you, we respect you: we know you're grown-ups and you've lived in the world and you're going to follow us wherever we go: we don't need to pummel you into submission or resort to cheap theatrics to keep you entranced. And so, more hope—for the always tenuous existence of American musical theatre.

Edward Scissorhands
When the neighborhood Avon lady, Mrs. Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) fails to make any profits in her neighborhood, she goes to the creepy castle on the hill and meets Edward. Edward is an artificial man whose inventor died before being able to put hands on his creation. Instead Edward has long metal scissor-blades for hands. Mrs. Boggs brings Edward home to her family and thus Edward must adjust to life in the suburbs. He falls in love with Kim Boggs, who is frightened of Edward at first, but grows to love him while everybody else in the neighborhood grows to distrust him because of his dangerous condition.

12 Angry Men
The story begins after closing arguments have been presented in a homicide case, as the judge is giving his instructions to the jury. The twelve men must determine, unanimously, whether the accused is not guilty or guilty of the charge of murder. These twelve then move to the jury room, where they begin to become acquainted with the personalities of their peers. Throughout their deliberation, not a single juror knows another by his name. In a preliminary vote they are startled to find that one juror has voted "not guilty." Many of the jurors are amazed and disturbed because Juror #8 (played by Fonda), the lone dissenter, does not see the "open and shut" nature of the case. Juror #8 maintains that he has a reasonable doubt, and it is morally wrong and illegal to condemn a man to death if any jury member has a reasonable doubt. As deliberation continues, Juror #9 (played by Joseph Sweeney) is impressed by Juror #8's conviction and agrees that the evidence should be thoroughly reviewed, and thus changes his vote to 'not guilty'.

Ahmanson Theater History and Information

The Ahmanson Theatre, in 1967, has had a huge quality of musicals, dramas, classic revivals, and comedies. Former artistic director, Robert Fryer is the leader of the theatre. The theatre has had many people in the entertainment world, such as: Jack Lemmon, Glenda Jackson, Katharine Hepburn, Mary Martin, Ingrid Bergman, Rex Harrison, Elizabeth Taylor, and many others.

Because of the long-running Tony Award-winning musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” the Ahmanson began to use the UCLA Hollywood Theatre, James A. Doolittle, as an exchange space. This ended up letting the Ahmanson to go on with its yearly contribution seasons. The Ahmanson Theatre is the largest contribution base in the country.

After “The Phantom of the Opera” closed in August 1993, the Ahmanson went on a 17 million dollar reconstruction project. They had the ceiling lowered, reduced the width of the theatre, new side boxes, and remodeled the lobbies. In January 1995, the Ahmanson re-opened. The opening season in the new Ahmanson began with “Candide.”

Since 1989, Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre at the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County has been under the leadership of Artistic Director/Producer Gordon Davidson, who has also serves as the Artistic Director for the CTG/Mark Taper Forum for the past 34 years. Center Theatre Group believes that theatre is an educational force and has the ability to change the lives of individuals and society at large. CTG is devoted to theatrical works that really affects perceptions of the world, enlarges the sense of the possible, and lights up the human skill.

We are not affiliated with the Ahmanson Theater, the Ahmanson Theater Box office or the Ahmanson Theater Center Group.
