The Hollywood Bowl History

Legendary artists have appeared at the Bowl throughout the years: Sinatra ... Pavarotti ... Streisand ... Stravinsky ... Heifetz. So have F.D.R., The Beatles, Mickey Rooney, and Edward G. Robinson, as well as such renowned "teams" as Fonteyn and Nureyev, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, Simon and Garfunkel, and Abbott and Costello. Baryshnikov has danced there, as has Fred Astaire. Garth Brooks, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Elton John, Al Jolson, and Judy Garland have headlined star-studded shows at the Bowl, but the all-time attendance record of 26,410 paid admissions was set on August 7, 1936, for a performance by the diminutive French opera star, Lily Pons. Also bands such as Air at the Hollywood Bowl, Oasis, Radiohead, and many others have played the Hollywood Bowl.Hollywood Bowl Christmas music as well as Hollywood Bowl Disney Concerts have become huge Hollywood Bowl events.

The Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest amphitheaters in the world, seating a capacity of 18 thousand. Since its opening in 1922, The Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And in 1991 gave its name to a resident band that has filled an extraordinary place in the musical life of Southern California, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

 As the place of a classical music festival, the Hollywood Bowl has offered a display for the world's supreme musicians. Bernstein, Walter, Monteux, Stokowski, Karajan, and Leinsdorf. But never through its lengthy and well-known history has the Bowl's training been restricted to symphonic events; fully theatrical operas were a normal part of the season in the early1950s.
  The Hollywood Bowl is not always of a musical environment. It is the sight of beginning training for Hollywood High School and other educational organizations, also for numerous film and TV producers; the Hollywood Bowl is the ideal setting for dancing, and romancing.

  The Hollywood Bowl has stayed well-liked and easy to get to to a wide cross-section of Southern California's different populations. Individual concert tickets were valued at fewer than 50 cents throughout those early years, and to this day one dollar buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts during the Summer Festival season, also the summer schedule contains a variety of musical productions.  In 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark.
