The line of the Orange County Performing Arts Center make back further than 45 years, when the newly twisted Orange County Philharmonic Society later renamed the Philharmonic Society of Orange County branded a imperative necessitate for a all-around concert facility in Orange County. However, the first local assembly specifically wished-for to facilitate the house of a major enlightening center in the feeling of the area wasn’t formed until 1969. That group, the Newport Harbor Foundation, conduct a feasibility study, which found that Newport Beach would not be an ideal spot for the innovative interior.

The Board of Directors of this institute unwavering that any thriving performing arts hub would have to be built on site near a union of freeways. In order for any project of this sort to be economically feasible, the costly land on which the interior stood would have to be donate. The group painstaking approximately 19 sites over a stage of six years. Of these diverse sites, three finalists made the short list for somber reflection; ultimately, even these be unwanted for a range of reason.
In February 1979, Elaine Redfield, a longtime Orange County arts advocate and South Coast Repertory Trustee, addressed a letter to Henry T. Segerstrom requesting the land adjoining to South Coast Repertory’s just opened Fourth Step Theater. Redfield recommended that this five-acre plot of chief real estate near the burgeoning South Coast Plaza shopping center, would be an ideal spot for the proposed Orange County Music Center as the planned facility was then called. The Segerstroms, who had previously demonstrated their firm assurance to the arts in Orange County by donating the land for SCR’s new theater, took the pitch under thoughtfulness.
The Segerstrom family was overwhelmed by the financial truthfulness of the project group, which had already raised a momentous amount of currency for the cause through a detailed network of Support Groups. The family had already determined that the arts would play an integral role in plateful the community begins its cultural identity. They predictable that there was sufficient public support for the performing arts in Orange County to sustain a cultural institution entirely through private funding. They were certain that such an foundation would serve as catalyst for the growth and advance for the county’s regional arts organization. As a result, the three then-Managing Partners of C.J. Segerstrom and Sons, Ruth Segerstrom, Henry T. Segerstrom and Harold (Hal) Segerstrom, collectively granted to the gift of land. On May 15, 1979, the Board of Directors of the performing arts center accepted the Segerstrom family’s charitable offer of five acres of land for the projected talent.
