Padres Biography and Information
Only 23,000 were on hand to witness the San Diego Padres entry into the National League (NL) on April 1969. The arrangement included three players (Bill Davis, Larry Stahl, and Rafael Robles) who would not succeed to hit .200 that season. Pitcher Dick Selma detained off the Astros and won the Padres entrance, 2-1. It would take a decade before the team placed a winning record, and in 1973 they were close to moved to Washington, D.C. Actually, the Topps Baseball Card Co. really printed cards for the '73 season with "Washington" in place of San Diego. The league assisted quashes that idea, and the San Diego Padres stayed in SoCal.
San Diego Padre players of note in the 1970s included Nate Colbert, Cito Gaston, Johnny Grubb, Dave Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Randy Jones, Gene Richards and Gaylord Perry. Jones and Perry won Cy Young prize, while Winfield was considered to be one of the best outfielders in the league before his leaving to the Yankees earlier to the 1981 campaign.
In a very horrible move the club traded Smith to St. Louis for Garry Templeton, a swap of shortstops. Though Templeton harden the middle for San Diego for close to a decade, Ozzie went on to a Hall of Fame talent career for the Cardinals.
In 1984 the San Diego Padres finally broke through by winning the National League West and advancing past the stumbling Cubs to the World Series. Unluckily they faced the Tigers, who rolled over them in five games, beating the Padre starters. Some Stars on that team were Steve Garvey, Graig Nettles, Terry Kennedy, Templeton, and the outfielder Tony Gwynn.
Gwynn was an all star for fifteen times, five-time Gold Glove winner, and eight-time batting champion. It is okay to say he was the best hitter of his generation.
In 1998 the team returned to the Fall Classic, again facing a frightening opponent: the New York Yankees, who won 114 games in the regular season. In 1984, the San Diego Padres were outclassed, this time losing four straight.
That 1998 season was a success, in spite of the crushing loss to New York in the Series. The Padres upset the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS, using masterful pitching and solid guard. The leader the offense was outfielder Steve Finley, Gwynn, and switch hitting Ken Caminiti.
