Pantages Theater History and Information

The Pantages Theatre is located in the middle of Hollywood, right on Hollywood Blvd. The Pantages has grown to be one of the most supreme theatres of Hollywood, suggesting both the wonderful past and the exciting future of the world's entertainment capital.

The Pantages has a background as impressive and different as the stage and screen charge, which viewers have gathered to take pleasure in for half a century. These days it's one of Los Angeles' top homes of a genuine theatre and a favorite place for TV shows, movies and music videos. For ten years the Pantages Theatre was the home of the dazzling Academy Awards productions.

The Pantages Theatre came to existence on June 4, 1930, opened by Alexander Pantages as part of the Fox Theatre cycle. On opening night viewers could not have been more impressed by the show. Alexander Pantages had imagined of this theatre, the last put together to bear his name, as a proper memorial to his position in the entertainment business. Even though the Wall Street Crash happened in completion, no cost was in danger in its building. The cost of the Pantages Theatre was $1.25 million.

The Pantages was made for the utmost of audience comfort ability, with over 40% of the interior space dedicated to the public, lobbies, lounges and restrooms. One of the first movie houses made after the beginning of talking pictures, the Pantages Theatre possessed the most complex sound gear anywhere in the world.

Universal Pictures, in 1959, booked Spartacus into the Pantages Theatre as an attraction, but on the state that the theatre’s capacity be sized down. The decrease to 1,512 seats required the Oscars to move, but there were still star-studded evenings that would be taking place. Celebrity regulars, in 1963, were taken care of to see a special showing of Cleopatra at $250 apiece; and the earnings went to the construction fund for the new Music Center.

Controlled by the Forman family, Pacific Theatres in December of 1967, bought the Pantages Theatre. Pacific, for a short time closed the theatre for renovation, and opened again with being known as one of the nicest theatres in LA. Though, in January of 1977 the screen went dark for the last time and work had to be done.

The Pantages opened again on February 15, 1977, but this time to customer’s enthusiasm to see the Broadway hit, “Bubbling Brown Sugar.” The Forman family's Pacific Theatres had been connected by the Nederlander Organization and it was their goal to bring live theatre back in a big way.

In 1977, “Man of La Mancha” was a big hit in the theatre and the Pantages was brought back to 2,691 seats, and established an instant favorite with both artists and viewers. The Pantages Theatre is most probable to provide the Los Angeles area forever.
