Qualcomm Stadium History and Information Qualcomm Stadium is one of America's best multi purpose facilities built to house a wide range of events in San Diego, ranging from baseball and football to concerts and off-road shows.
The Stadium has become the middle of the San Diego sports sight and provided the City a Major-League character in the world of sports. Several exceptional sports events that have taken place at the Stadium are the World Series in 1984, NFL Super Bowl XXII in 1988, and Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in 1978 and 1992. Moreover, Qualcomm Stadium is considered to be the home of the San Diego Chargers of the NFL, the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball and college football's San Diego State Aztecs as well. The Holiday Bowl, which is one of college football's leading post season bowl games, also takes place at the Stadium every year.
Other well known events held frequently at the Stadium such as concerts, truck and tractor pulls and super-cross motorcycle races. On top of that, the Stadium parking lot can handle such events as circuses, auto racing, and RV sales.
The stadium was built in 1967. The Stadium was renamed in 1981 to respect the late San Diego Union sports writer Jack Murphy, who started the metamorphosis of San Diego from a navy outpost to a world sports center by first persuading hotel magnate Baron Hilton to move his Chargers Football Team from their home (at the Los Angeles Coliseum) to San Diego. Murphy then guided the charge to build a world class stadium in San Diego. The local designer selected to design the stadium, Frank L. Hope and Associates, had by no means designed a stadium before. From 1969 till now, San Diego Stadium happened to the only stadium to win the First Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects.
