7 years after their debut album Pink Martini return with what may possibly be 1 of the most interesting, well/rounded & listenable albums of the year.

Originally the creation of pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini sound like what happens when classically trained orchestra musicians get bored with wearing suits & want to hang out in clubs; a rich mix of brass, strings & percussion, evoking images of beautifully dressed women & be suited men sashaying through an impeccably decorated rooftop cocktail bar. Afro/Cuban rhythms, the existential sadness of Parisian café tunes, some Caribbean calypso & then a Hollywood golden era string arrangement, all of it polished to near perfection, with the sassy wit of the 1930’s & none of the shrinking self parody of the noughties.

When lead singer China Forbes ’88 was 8 years old, she wanted to sing just like disco diva Donna Summer. Now as the lead singer for Pink Martini, a successful 14 piece ensemble that plays a wildly eclectic brand of smoky jazz & exotic pop, Forbes has developed her own distinct vocal style & achieved her own sort of diva status, China sings in 9 different languages - Spanish, Italian, French, Croatian & English to say just a few, each song is with feeling & confidence whatever the tongue. Since forming in the mid 90’s, Pink Martini has developed a large but loyal international following. Their self released CD, Sympathique (Heinz Records release, 1997), has sold an impressive 750,000 copies & many of their songs have been feat. in such movies as Josie & the Pussycats, Nurse Betty & Town & Country. The group has become the unofficial party band at the Cannes Film Festival, where they have performed for many years running, & have toured throughout the world.
