Fish Fest Verizon Wireless Amphitheater History and Bio
Fish Fest is back.
The biggest festival devoted exclusively to contemporary Christian pop and rock music in Southern California was such a huge success in its inaugural edition at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre last year, attracting about 11,000 adults, teens and children to the 16,000-capacity venue, that it’s already become an annual tradition.
“It was an amazing first year,” said Tim Taber, president of Tustin-based Transparent Productions, the leading Christian concert promotions company in Southern California and promoter of Fish Fest, the 8 1/2-hour contemporary Christian music festival sponsored by KFSH-FM, or 95.9 The Fish, which returns to the amphitheater Sunday.
“Everything was very, very positive: the talent, the attendance, the feedback we got. It exceeded my expectations,” said Taber.
“It was very well received,” agreed Chuck Tyler, program director for The Fish and the other four Los Angeles radio stations that are part of Salem Communications Corp., which owns more than 80 stations nationwide, 10 of those with “Fish” programming.
“The turnout showed there’s a real appetite for a family-friendly festival. You can bring the kids and not be fearful of over-the-top language coming at you, from the stage or the audience,” Tyler said.
“Our motto has always been, ‘safe for the whole family.’”
Fish Fest continues its winning safe policy by bringing on 13 bands and solo artists — up from 11 last year — including headliner Third Day, the country’s leading contemporary Christian band, according to The Fish.
“They are the biggest Christian rock band in the country, bar none,” Taber said.
“They are definitely our most popular core artists, appealing to all ages,” agreed Tyler, who, along with his staff and Taber, selects the artists who will appear on Fish Fest, based on the Salem stations’ play lists of most requested and best-selling Christian groups. “We play a ton of their music. They’re very dynamic and very personable.”
