Pacific Symphony Verizon Wireless Amphitheater History and Bio Founded in 1978, the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, California, is the largest orchestra formed in the United States in the last thirty years and the third largest orchestra in California. Led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, the Symphony is recognized as an outstanding emerging orchestra in a burgeoning cultural community. The Los Angeles Times has remarked, “St.Clair has become a significant musical leader in his years on this podium…as a result of his bold orchestra-building, his growing mastery of the repertory and his expanding astuteness at the art of programming.” Under St.Clair, the Symphony not only embarks on its first European tour in 2006, expanding its reach to an international level, but also takes another major step forward at the start of its 2006-07 season, as it moves into the new Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, designed by architect Cesar Pelli with acoustician Russell Johnson. The Symphony offers moving musical experiences with repertoire ranging from the great orchestral masterworks to music from today’s most prominent composers, highlighted by the annual American Composers Festival. The Christian Science Monitor has commented, “with the American Composers Festival, the Pacific Symphony has lifted the baton on an unprecedented … initiative to explore the impact of non-European sounds on Western music. This marks the Symphony as a leader in contemporary classical music.” In addition to the Symphony’s main stage concerts, the organization also features one of the best-attended Pops series performed by an orchestra in the United States, and chamber music, chamber orchestra and family concerts series. The Pacific Symphony has played a central role in the phenomenal growth of the performing arts in Orange County, considered to be one of the ten fastest growing communities and centers for business and technology in the world. Presenting more than eighty concerts a year (expanding to more than one-hundred in 2006-07) and a rich array of education and community programs, the Symphony touches more than 50,000 Orange County residents—from school children to senior citizens. In addition to its winter home, the Symphony presents a summer outdoor series at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, the organization’s summer home since 1987.
