The Vision
In 1987, the late Lillian Disney complete an first gift of $50 million to build a world-class performance place as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney's loyalty to the arts. Since then, other contributions and accumulated interest bring the Disney family's sum contribution to over $100 million. The County of Los Angeles arranged to provide the land and major additional funding to finance Walt Disney Concert Hall's six-level profound parking garage.
In 1988, famous architect Frank Gehry was chosen to design the complex, whose final shape he unveiled in 1991. The County initiated structure of the parking garage in 1992, implementation it in 1996. Construction on the Concert Hall itself began in November 1999. Also that year, the Music Center launched a capital drive to entire the construction subsidy. Many shared, foundation, and personality partners, all along with the State of California, have contributed munificently to the fight due to the outstanding direction of Andrea L. Van de Kamp, Chairman of the Music Center, Eli Broad, Chairman of SunAmerica, Inc., and past Los Angeles Mayor Richard J. Riordan. The Los Angeles Philharmonic provided added funding for the core development and full support for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Center.
