Black Label Society Wiltern Theater History, Facts and Information
The release of The Best of Bonnie Raitt On Capitol 1989-2003, her 17th album, makes it very clear that Raitt’s contributions, in music as well as social issues, will endure as hallmarks of our time.
Born into a musical family, the 9 time Grammy winner is the daughter of celebrated Broadway singer John Raitt & accomplished pianist/singer Marge Goddard. Bonnie was raised in Los Angeles, with Quaker traditions, and a commitment to social activism. A guitar (Stella) given to her as a Christmas present launched Raitt on her creative journey buy the age of 8.
Exposure to the album Blues at Newport 1963 at age 14 had caught her interest in blues & slide guitar, and between classes at Harvard she explored these & other styles in local coffeehouse gigs. 3 years after entering college, Raitt left to commit herself full-time to music, and shortly afterward found herself opening for surviving giants of the blues. From Mississippi Fred McDowell, Sippie Wallace, Son House, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker she learned 1rst-hand lessons of life as well as invaluable techniques of performance.
As word spread about a blueswoman with red hair, her soulful, unaffected way of singing and her uncanny insights into blues guitar. Warner Bros Records tracked her down, signed her up, and in 1971 released her debut album, Bonnie Raitt. Her interpretations of classic blues by Robert Johnson and Sippie Wallace made a powerful critical impression, but the presence of intriguing tunes by contemporary songwriters, as well as several examples of Raitt’s own writing, indicated that this artist would not be restricted to any one pigeonhole or style.
In between sessions, when not burning highways on tour with her band, Raitt devoted herself to playing benefits and speaking out in support of an array of worthy causes, including stopping the war in Central America, the Sun City, the historic 1980 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden, co-founding MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), & working for environmental protection & the rights of women and Native Americans.
After an alliance with Capitol Records in 1989, Bonnie achieved new levels of popular and critical acclaim. Raitt won 4 Grammy Awards in 1990, 3 for her Nick of Time album and one for Raitt’s duet with John Lee Hooker on his breakthrough album, The Healer. Within weeks, Nick of Time shot to #1. (It is now quintuple Platinum.) Luck of the Draw (1991, 7 times Platinum) brought even more success, firing 2 hit singles, "Something to Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me," up the charts and adding three more Grammys to her shelf. The double Platinum Longing in Their Hearts, released in 1994, feat. the hit single “Love Sneakin’ Up On You” and was honored with a Grammy for Best Pop Album. It was followed by the live double CD and film Road Tested in 1995.
Bonnie’s recent Hall of Fame inductions, the time just seemed right for a retrospective album feat. popular songs from her 6 Capitol albums. In September of 2003, the label released The Best of Bonnie Raitt On Capitol 1989-2003.
Some 30 years after her recording debut, Bonnie's performance on Silver Lining is rock solid. There's nothing trendy in the energies that define this album, where her broadening search for elements in many diverse musical cultures runs parallel to her deepening mastery of the blues.
Silver Lining is Bonnie and her touring band in all their glory. The lineup of George Marinelli (Bruce Hornsby and the Range), on guitar, ex-Neville Brothers James "Hutch" Hutchinson (Bassist), Ricky Fataar (Beach Boys) on drums has developed uncanny empathy through years of playing with Raitt.
One of the hallmarks of Bonnie's style is her ability to find material. Rather than let other considerations guide her, Raitt has always followed her musical curiosity, only going into the studio when she feels she has the perfect combination of songs at that time. On Silver Lining songs like, "I Can't Help You Now" & "Time Of Our Lives," were co-authored by Gordon Kennedy, Tommy Sims, and Wayne Kirkpatrick, who wrote Eric Clapton’s "Change the World". There's also a stunning interpretation of David Gray's beautifully titled song, "Silver Lining," one of the most innovative works Bonnie has ever recorded.
