Lewis Black Wiltern Theater History, Facts and Information If Black weren't a successful comic, he'd be the crazy guy in New York street gesticulating & foaming at the mouth talking about the end of the world. After bouncing around the club scene for decades, Black, 55, has broken through in a business traditionally dominated by comics half his age. Lewis Black (born Aug. 30th, 1948) grew up in Maryland, a Jewish kid who quickly realized he didn't buy organized religion. Though Lewis claims he has always resisted authority, he was, by all descriptions, an excellent student who, after being taken by his parents to the theater as a kid, decided he wanted to write plays. Black's style grew from the antiauthority, intellectual comedy of George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, and Bill Hicks, the rants of Sam Kinison, & the absurdist humor of Bob Newhart. Lewis stage act does include some boilerplate material of the modern day stand/up complaints about the weather & health clubs - but his strength is talking about politics. Lewis is best known for his regular appearances on Comedy Central's The Daily Show delivering his "Back in Black" commentaries. The angry man has become such a commodity that Black, a drama school graduate who has written 40 plays, has begun simply performing his "Daily Show" segment over the last year. As a comedian, Black has opened for Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Chicago, & Harry Belafonte. In addition to the Daily Show, Black can be seen announcing sports on “Hoop Life,” on Showtime. In his spare time Lewis works with the 52nd street Project, a non-profit organization where members of the theatrical community do work with inner city youth
