Nickel Creek Information Nickel Creek is an American acoustic trio with roots in the style of bluegrass music, comprised of members Sara Watkins (fiddle), her brother Sean Watkins (guitar), & Chris Thile (mandolin). The band formed in 1989 with Scott Thile in southern California, Sean the oldest of the children was only 12 years old at the time. Guitarist Sean Watkins extols the freedom a trio can provide. Violinist Sara Watkins will sum things up. Nickel Creek are like any other band who manages to write, play, & sing a commanding album. Although the music bursts with contemporary nerve, the recording sessions drew on the timeless power of classic analog equipment, vintage reverb, & single stereo microphones. The result is a newly unignorable Nickel Creek who fuse & personalize a wide array of styles with uncommon vigor & élan. In Nickel Creek's early days they recorded 2 albums, both of which are no longer produced. Later, Alison Krauss helped them develop their style & produced their self titled 2000 release on Sugar Hill. This is now recognized as their 1rst major release. After a few years of touring with various bassists, Mark Schatz has taken over the role as bassist since Scott retired from the group. The band has released 3 albums & won a Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Contemporary Folk Album for their release, This Side. Nickel Creek & This Side have both been certified gold for sales above 500,000. They released their 3rd album, Why Should The Fire Die? Arguably the finest acoustic string ensemble operating across America today - Nickel Creek is the future of acoustic music, & their future has never looked better.
