Alternative Metal act formed from the ruins of metalers the Kyuss, in 1997 Queens of the Stone Age pitted singer/guitarist Josh Homme & bassist Nick Oliveri in a sleeker, more straightforward approach to hard rock. With 3 critically acclaimed albums for Interscope Records under their belts, & legions of hardcore fans coming out to their infamously live shows night after night, it's fair to say that the Queens Of The Stone Age are very much a real rock n’ roll band. Simply put, they do what real rock & roll bands do. They play loud & hard, & write albums full of emotionally charged rock n’roll songs that keep you coming back for repeated listens time after time.
QOTSA tapped into the post-millennial modern rock zeitgeist with their 2002 breakthrough "Songs for the Deaf," a collection of brutally loud, utterly thrilling sonic salvos threaded with mock DJ voice-overs for nonexistent radio stations. Everything seemed to fall into place for the band, which has been quietly building a dedicated fan base since 1998. With Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters playing drums & Mark Lanegan former Screaming Trees frontman taking the microphone for a few tunes, "Deaf" became a hit for rock aficionados. The single "No One Knows" rocketed to #1 & stayed there for 4 weeks on the Billboard Rock charts. With the help of non/stop touring & radio support, "Deaf" sold more than 922,000 copies in the United States alone.
Following the multi-platinum success Queens of the Stone Age hit the road playing the main stage at the Leeds Festival & performed live on the David Letterman Show, Late Night With Conan O'Brien & Saturday Night Live. After taking some time off to re-group, QOTSA returned in spring of 2005 with a line-up of Homme - Van Leeuwan - Lanegan - Alain Johannes on bass & Joey Castillo on drums. Their current album, "Lullabies To Paralyze", has sold over 300,000 copies & is expected to appear on many critics' top 10 lists for 2005.
