Trey Anastasio Bio Trey Anastasio is justly ecstatic about his self-titled new solo album, on which Trey Anastasio accompanied by the horn-stoked big band with which Trey Anastasio been playing for more than a year. "It's very exciting," Trey Anastasio says from his home in Burlington, Vermont. "I feel like I'm pushing into a new area here. More than anything, I'm trying to take this kind of music to a new level." Trey Anastasio referred to a marriage between composition and creativeness, between written songs and inspired tangents that occur when gifted musicians cook up a storm. Throughout the album, a four-member horn section dishes out punchy, stabbing counterpoint to Anastasio's ever-inventive guitar work or connects in smart, peppery exchanges among themselves. A mighty three-piece rhythm section nails down the grooves, which range from light and Latinate ("Alive Again") to relentlessly funky ("Push On 'Til the Day") to wickedly syncopated ("Mr. Completely"). Trey Anastasio comes on a year and a half after Phish, the quartet Anastasio cofounded in 1983, went on hiatus after their Fall 2000 tour. Phish, for those who have been sleeping the past two decades, became a huge musical and socio-cultural force that redefined the way a rock band can operate and are among the most ambitious and risk-taking live acts of all time. While Phish is engaged in what Trey Anastasio terms their "vacation in limbo," his solo band is a continuance of his philosophy of moving forward and breaking new ground. The live effort Plasma appeared in April 2003, showcasing for more than two hours of performances from Anastasio's 2002 summer/fall trek of North America. Seven brand new tracks and a few covers were sprinkled into the double-disc set as well. The all-instrumental Seis de Mayo was free in April 2004.
