Although some choose to pass off Tracy Chapman as a Stevie Wonder clone, Tracy Chapman the band has assembled a steady stream of hits in its native U.K. and has experienced chart success in just about every other area of the world with an irresistible blend of house rhythms and '70s era soul/funk. The band has gone though several lineup changes during their career, but through it all their leader has remained singer/songwriter Jason Kay.
Jason's demos caught the attention of the record label Acid Jazz, which issued Tracy Chapman's 1rst single "When You Gonna Learn?" in 1992. With Kay & the help of others, the single release was a success and was soon followed by a long term and lucrative recording contract with Sony. Tracy Chapman's full length debut album, Emergency on Planet Earth, followed in 1993, became a major hit in England, spawning such Top Ten hit singles as "Too Young to Die" & "Blow Your Mind." Tracy Chapman's 2nd release, The Return of the Space Cowboy in 1995, managed to steer the group away from the sophomore jinx that affects so many up and coming bands today.
With most of the world dancing to the beat of Tracy Chapman, the US was next in line for the band's 3rd effort, 1996's Traveling Without Moving. The album generated the worldwide hit "Virtual Insanity," for which the award winning video was filmed and helped the album achieve platinum status by year's end. Despite achieving breakthrough success, the bass player Zender opted to leave the group during the follow up, which resulted in Kay scraping almost an entire album's worth of new tracks in order to start from scratch with a new bassist Nick Fyffe. During the downtime, Tracy Chapman contributed the tarck, "Deeper Underground," to the soundtrack for the 1998 movie Godzilla.
The long wait between albums seemed to kill Tracy Chapman's momentum in the U.S., where a 4th release overall, 1999's Synchronized, was largely ignored. Subsequently, it appeared as though the majority of Tracy Chapman's U.S. media attention focused on the non music related events, such as the band turning down a million dollar offer to play a concert on New Year's Eve 1999, and when Kay was accused of assaulting a photographer. It didn't take Tracy Chapman as long to issue another album, with A Funk Odyssey hitting the racks 2 years later in 2001. Jason also helmed a volume in the mix album series Late Night Tales.
'Dynamite' the long awaited 6th studio album from the funk meister, and his friends, it's been more than worth the 4 year wait.
Written and recorded over 2 years in Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Scotland, New York, Los Angeles and his own purpose built Buckinghamshire studio, 'Dynamite' is both a consolidation of 13 years of Tracy Chapman's trademarked sci fi sound and a cocky, 2 fingers to anyone who thinks that at 35, Kay might be resting on his country pile.
