Bonnie Raitt Warfield History, Facts and Information
The daughter of accomplished pianist Marjorie Goddard & Broadway star John Raitt, Bonnie Raitt grew up in Los Angeles in a family of artists and social activists. At the age of 8, Raitt received a Stella guitar for Christmas. Bonnie's ultimate 6-string prowess & singing would ultimately land her a deal with a major label by 1971.
"Bonnie Raitt" (1971), her Warner Brothers debut album, feat. blues classics by Robert Johnson and Sippie Wallace, as well as what became her trademark mix of R&B, rock, originals and contemporary songs by great, unknown, songwriters. It displayed precocious power/chops the performer had gathered from East coast coffeehouses & on the road as Raitt joined the folk and blues revival.
With 6 albums in 7 years, "Give it Up," "Takin' My Time" and "Home Plate" revealed Bonnie’s strengths as an interpreter of great songs (Randy Newman, Jackson Browne, Eric Kaz, and Alan Toussaint). "Sweet Forgiveness" (1977) was a particular highlight, its persistence won by years on the road, and its accessibility landing Raitt her 1rst charting single, "Runaway" a funky remake of Del Shannon's.
"The Glow," "Nine Lives", & "Green Light" underscored Bonnie Raitt's creative achievement thru the 80's, gathering a total of 3 Grammy nominations. Raitt also continued to move to the front of other artists, demonstrating concern about issues such as the war in central America, nuclear power, the "Sun City" project (apartheid), Native American women's and human rights as well as environmental protection.
In 1989 Capitol Records with producer Don Was, created a new alliance and along came Bonnie's big breakthrough, the largely successful "Nick of Time." Garnering 4 Grammy Awards in 1990, including Best Album of the year.
With "Luck of the Draw" and its hits, "Something to Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me," the winning streak continued. 1993's "Longing in Their Hearts" followed with more critical and commercial success and "Road Tested," a live double CD & movie, marked the beginning of a career long dream.
With 9 Grammys & non/stop touring under her belt, Raitt decided to take a break and enjoy some of her well earned rewards. Spending time enjoying family and friends and traveling for fun, mountain biking, hiking and doing yoga instead of working brought her a great sense of purpose & renewal.
Bonnie never really went too far away from work, managing to sing & play on numerous friends' records (B.B. King, Ruth Brown, guest spots with Keb' Mo', Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Bruce Cockburn, and also tracks on the tribute records for Pete Seeger, Lowell George, and Stevie Ray Vaughan) & fundraising, benefits and activism in service to the causes Raitt holds dear.
In 1995, Raitt created the Bonnie Raitt Fender Guitar Project with Fender and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to encourage young inner city girls to learn to play guitar. Proceeds from the sales of her Signature Guitar help the effort; Bonnie continues to do concerts to also protect our ancient growth forests & a woman's right to choose.
